How to Evaluate a Vintage Glass Vase

A striking vintage vase can be decorative, collectible or both. Before deciding what you have, slow down and examine the color, form, construction and condition.

Study the color in natural light

Vintage glass can appear very different under warm indoor lighting. Look at the vase near a window and note whether the color is consistent throughout the glass, layered, cased, opalescent or flashed onto the surface. Color alone rarely identifies a maker, but it can help narrow the possibilities.

Examine the rim and base

The rim can reveal whether a vase was hand-finished, molded, ground or polished. The base may show a pontil mark, mold seams, wear from age or an etched maker signature. Photograph these areas clearly before researching a piece.

Look for intentional versus accidental irregularities

Bubbles, tool marks and slight asymmetry can occur in handmade glass. Chips, cracks, bruises and rough repairs are different and should be evaluated carefully. Run a fingertip gently around the rim and inspect the base under strong light.

Consider the whole design

Shape, applied decoration, controlled bubbles, hobnail textures, ruffled rims and cased colors can all be useful identification clues. Compare several characteristics together rather than matching on color or shape alone.

Photograph before you research

A front view, side view, rim, base and any signature or label give you much better information for comparison. That same photo set is also useful if you later decide to sell the vase online.
